Principal Investigator: Amparo Hurtado Albir.

Investigators Team: Laura Asquerino Egoscozabal, Allison Beeby, Olivia Fox, Anabel Galán-Mañas, Gabriele Grauwinkel, Anna Kuznik, Wilhelm Neunzig, Christian Olalla-Soler, Patricia Rodriguez-Inés, Lupe Romero.

The fundamental investigator’s interests of PACTE group are:

  1. The empirical and experimental investigation about the translation competence and its acquisition in written Translation.

  2. The curricular design in Translator’s formation.

  3. The use of empirical and experimental methodology in traductology.

  4. The use of TICs applied to the investigation in translation

Investigation Lines (about the translation and interpretation department) which are studied:

  • Use of the empirical methodology in the investigation about translation and interpretation.

  • Translation and interpretation’s cognition.

  • Translation and interpretation’s formation.

  • TICs applied to translation

  • Professional and Laboral aspects of translation and interpretation.

  • Textuality and translation.

PACTE has been a competitive group of investigation since 1997 and a consolidated group of Cataluña since 2002. It has been member of the Institute of Neurosciences of the “Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona” (from 2001 to 2009) and currently it is member of GRECO. (Recerca’s Group in competences) at the “Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña).

PACTE has been the initiator of the thematic network (translation, research, empiricism, cognition), which groups experts around the word in empirical and experimental investigation in translation, and it has been the coordinated for two years.

Acquisition and Translation Competence:

The empirical-experimental research on the Translation Competence and its acquisition in written translation is the fundamental research of the PACTE group.

This investigation is held by taking into account two complementary points of view:

  • Translation Process: data collection and analysis through experimental studies about the mental processes that are involved in, and the required competences and abilities.

  • Translation Product: data collection and analysis about the obtained results when translating from discourse analysis and the methodology of electronic corpus.

This investigation is structured in two big stages:

  • By the first phase that was carried out in 2010, it was made an experimental study about the Translation Competence in which professional translators and foreign languages professors who did not have any experience regarding with translation participated. The previous, with the purpose of collecting data about the mental processes that were carried out at the moment of translating, and the knowledge and abilities that are required from the subject.

  • By the second phase that started in 2010, an experimental study about the Acquisition of the Translation Competence was developed, in which students of translation participated, realizing a tracing by means of an experimental design of repeated measurement.

In both cases, exploratory studies and pilot tests were made in order to prepare the experiments. The study was made by using six linguistic combinations: English-Catalan, English-Spanish, French-Catalan, French-Spanish, German-Catalan and German-Spanish.
